KEN KEARN'S HOME BUILDERS' TEST
VISUALIZATION

The ability to think in terms of three-dimensional properties is called structural visualization. Everyone is believed to possess either structural or its opposite abstract visualization, one or the other, but not both.

Both have their advantages, but structural visualization is needed for do-it-yourself homebuilding. Most people are "structural" thinkers and it's doubtful whether anyone without structural visualization would be happy building a "structural" project as large as a house. See if any of these ring a bell for you:

1. Are you a fan of put-together-take-apart puzzles? (1 point if you are.)
2. Are you good at working mazes? Jigsaw puzzles? (1/2 point each, if you're good.)
3. Do you often try to figure out how certain things are put together and perhaps want to take them apart to find out? (1 point for a yes.)
4. Can you walk through someone's home and later sketch out a rough floor plan of the room arrangement? (5 points if you can.)
5. Can you draw a sketch of something you want to build and follow the sketch as you build it? (A yes gives you 5 points on this one.)
6. Can you read blueprints? (If yes, 5 points.)
7. Would you rather do research for a treatise on the workings of color television or on the effectiveness of television commercials? (2 points for workings.)
8. Does your work deal with the concrete or the abstract? If both at which part do you excel? (5 points for the concrete.)
9. Do you like working with wood? (A yes answer counts for 3 points.)
Since you either HAVE structural visualization or you don't have it, you may claim all 20 points on this portion of the test if you scored 7 or better, or if you are certain by other indications that you posses structural visualization.
